What Are The Best Shooting Lenses For When The Sun Shines?

There's a range of shooting lens tints to choose from and each of them are suitable for certain light conditions. Knowing the right tint for you will help you enjoy far more success on the range.

Shooting glasses are essential when you go clay pigeon shooting, not least for the essential purpose of providing you with eye protection in case of any splinters or other debris flying your way. Any pair of our clay and game glasses, fitted with shatterproof lenses as standard, will provide you with the eye protection you need. But other factors, such as the amount of sunlight on the day, will determine the specific tint you need.

When it comes to clay and game shooting glasses, there are various tints to choose from. There are specific situations when a certain colour tint is more ideal, expecially during sunnier days. Anyone who has been shooting in the UK during the winter will have encountered gloomy, cloudy conditions with poor light. But even in winter, there are days with blue skies and dazzling sunshine.

For shooting in bright sun, there are three main tint options which will absorb the excess light entering your eyes:

·       Red

·       Brown

·       Target Orange

Each of these colours will reduce glare and improve the contrast between the target and a blue sky.

What Is The Science behind Lens Tints And Visual Contrasts?

The science behind this comes from considering the visible light spectrum, which does not include all the colours we see. Blue light is very visible, of course, being the colour that is visible when all other light frequencies have been scattered (the Rayleigh scattering effect).

While that explains why the sky is blue, there are colours beyond the visible spectrum that can still be discerned by the human eye and brain, purple among them.

Therefore, it's important for your eye to be able to detect contrasts between colours and tinted lenses will provide you with such contrast by neutralising the blue light in the sky to improve the definition of the target.

It might all seem very complex stuff, but it can be made very simple when you put the right lenses in and enjoy getting a clear sight of the clay as you prepare to pull the trigger.
