Can You Use Prescription Contact Lenses When Target Shooting?

If you have a prescription, a dedicated set of shooting glasses will help improve your aim, but find out why contact lenses can sometimes throw off your aim.

dedicated shooting glasses

Recreational shooting, whether it involves static targets or clay pigeons, places greater demand on your eyesight than most other activities.

Because of this, many people who have adequate enough eyesight to not typically require

glasses may benefit from a pair of dedicated shooting glasses, whilst people with registered sight issues typically benefit from a bespoke pair rather than using lens inserts or two pairs of glasses.

One question that many shooters with sight issues have asked is whether they can use contact lenses when shooting rather than relying on a dedicated pair of glasses that provide safety, lens filtration, comfort and accuracy when shooting.

Besides vanity, contact lenses are lighter and do not require you to carry two pairs of glasses or use a tinted insert. Instead, you wear prescription contacts for the sight correction and a pair of non-prescription glasses or goggles for safety and the tint you need.

Whilst it is possible that this can work for you, it generally comes with its own set of issues that can be far more of an issue when shooting than in day-to-day life.

Lenses can sometimes create a fog or haze if they become dirty, are scratched, are worn too long, or the eye gets too dry. Because you are focusing your eyes intently when shooting, the risk of the latter can become significant.

As well as this, hard contact lenses often require constant blinking to recentre the lens on the cornea. This can cause focus issues and even small amounts of warping that can affect your aim.

The potential for eye strain during prolonged shooting sessions also cannot be understated, particularly when focusing to pick up distant targets.

Ultimately, there are a lot of options when it comes to shooting with a glasses prescription, but in most cases, it is better to rely on a pair of prescription glasses designed with shooting in mind rather than contacts.
