3 Simple Exercises To Improve Your Aim Before Shooting

3 Simple Exercises To Improve Your Aim Before Shooting

The beauty of target shooting competitions is that it is a contest which tests the connection between your body, your brain and your mind. Everything connects, and the smallest details matter when focusing on fast-moving targets.

This is why having the right target shooting glasses for your eyes is vital to ensure you are focusing correctly and your aim is not affected by barely perceptible distortions.

As well as this, however, the best results from a clay pigeon shoot, skeet shooting or other target competitions come from preparation and focus. With that in mind, here are three simple exercises you can do to boost your focus, clear your mind and get ready to compete.

Focus Drills For Boosting Your Attention

Aligning your sights, ensuring your glasses are set correctly and focusing on down-range targets requires not only sharp eyes but concentration, which is something you can build up through a range of very simple exercises.

One of the easiest and most effective of these is the Coin Test:

  • Place a coin (or other small object) on your table.
  • Set a timer for 30 seconds.
  • Stare at it without looking away. If you look away, reset the timer.
  • Gradually increase how long you set the timer.

Visualise The Competition Process

The best way to succeed at any complex competition is to visualise how you will succeed.

Think about every detail, from the feel of your glasses on your face, your stance, the view of the sights, the weight of the weapon in your hand, the texture of the grip, your breathing and when you should pull the trigger.

Being consistent with your visualisation makes it second nature and can help you during real competitions.

Rhythmic Breathing Exercises

Your breathing is a key component of your accuracy, as the movement of your body as it takes in oxygen will affect your hands and your focus on the target.

Breathe in through your nose and count to four. After this, hold your breath and count to three. Finally, exhale gently through your nose and mouth whilst counting to four again.

Maintaining a steady rhythm will steady your aim, leading to much more accurate shooting.
